Proposed a decade ago, it’s a scaled-up version of the storied Super-K detector and will consist of a cylindrical stainless steel tank 78 meters tall and 74 meters wide, holding 260,000 tons of ultrapure water—five times as much as Super-K.

Hyper-K will consist of a subterranean cylindrical tank 70 meters tall and filled with 260,000 tons of ultrapure water.

Rather than relying on ultrapure water-purification systems, such as Milli-Q, that many labs use, Jogler’s group makes its own pure water by distilling it, twice.

The detector consists of 50,000 tonnes of ultrapure water surrounded by a vast array of light sensors.
