According to the RCM, the Belfast Health Trust is holding additional clinics, including at weekends, to address the backlog.

The RCM is worried about a vicious circle - staffing shortages mean existing midwives have to work harder, which can lead to them burning out and deciding to resign.

The RCM announced a half-day strike from 08:00 GMT until 12:00, across all five of Northern Ireland's health trusts, but said care would still be provided to those who need it.

The RCM has sought to reassure patients that the strike will not impact the delivery of safe services.

RCM's Director for Northern Ireland Karen Murray said the patience of midwives had run out.
