For Zemzem this feeling meant she had to flee her home for a second time.

Returning home a month after fleeing advancing rebel forces proved to be a fatal mistake for Zemzem's family.

Sixty-five women work for ZemZem, and for many, it is a first job.

She had never worked before ZemZem; even now, she says, she is happy to combine that work with being a homemaker.

Then, in May 2009, she decided — inspired, she said, by her two identities, Turkish and European — to found ZemZem Atelier, which today produces mostly scarves.
