Less than two months after Nayera Ashraf's murder, another university student, 20-year-old Salma Bahgat, was fatally stabbed at least 15 times in Zagazig, between Cairo and Mansoura.

Officers took Shehta to a police station in the Nile Delta city of Zagazig, where he collapsed and lost consciousness, CPJ reported.

After returning to Egypt he became head of the engineering department at Zagazig University.

“I am against these officers being allowed to return to their work,” said Mohamed Diab, 61, a doctor in Zagazig, about 50 miles north of Cairo.

The Zagazig criminal court, northeast of the capital Cairo, sentenced another 36 defendants to 10 years in prison on similar charges, including rioting, inciting violence against security forces and joining an outlawed group, a reference to the Brotherhood.
