Ysaye

In this short program, there was room for one of the Bach partitas, or even one of the Ysaye sonatas that Murray recorded in 2012.

But there are plenty of solo works for other instruments, with Bach’s unaccompanied violin and cello suites towering at the top of the list: Paganini’s 24 caprices and Ysaye’s six sonatas for solo violin; Philip Glass’s “Songs and Poems” or Tania Leon’s “Four Pieces” for solo cello.

The second half contained two singing melodic works and two virtuosic showpieces: Aaron Jay Kernis’s 1995 “Air” for violin and piano in a beautiful reading that made a great case for the work and Rachmaninoff’s famous “Vocalise” on the one hand, Ysayë’s third solo sonata and Sarasate’s “Carmen Fantasy” on the other.

Led by Levine artist-in-residence Ysaye Maria Barnwell, formerly of the group Sweet Honey in the Rock.

The multi-sensory concert will present an eclectic range of musical stylings, including Ysaye Barnwell’s “We Are” and “Wanting Memories,” Aaron Copland’s “The Promise of Living,” and John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s “In My Life.”
