The Oscar-winning film, directed by James Cameron, saw Kate Winslet play upper class socialite Rose opposite Leonardo DiCaprio's third class passenger Jack Dawson on the doomed ship's maiden voyage.

A romantic bit of magical realism, the movie imagined what it would be like if humans could wipe clean some of their memories, with Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey playing onetime lovers who underwent the procedure to forget one another — or maybe not.

Also up for the award were first-time nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno, who played a drug mule in “Maria Full of Grace”; fellow first-timer Imelda Staunton, who played the title character, an abortion provider, in “Vera Drake”; and Kate Winslet, for playing a woman who’s had her memories erased in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

Winslet missed a nomination this year for her biopic “Lee,” based on American photographer Lee Miller.

She called the win over Hollywood heavyweights - including Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet - both "strange" and "weird".
