Waterton Lakes National Park

A town near Waterton Lakes National Park about 160 miles south of Calgary stood in for the survivalist camp in snow-blanked Colorado.

At the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana, tribal leaders who re-established wild bison in 2016 have described their vision for herds that roam freely into neighboring Glacier National Park, the Badger-Two Medicine wilderness and Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park - an area spanning several thousand square miles.

The project is part of the first-in-the-world International Dark Sky Park, which is a partnership with Waterton Lakes National Park across the border in Canada.

The tribe is negotiating with state officials to allow these bison, which are free of brucellosis, to range freely into Glacier national park and even, hopefully, one day as north as Waterton Lakes national park and Blood Tribe Reservation Canada – which would make it the first international bison herd in over a century.

Much-needed rain fell across Montana on Monday and slowed the spread of a fire burning near the U.S.-Canada border enough for Canadian officials to lift an evacuation order issued last week for Waterton Lakes National Park.
