The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and Yankton Sioux tribes on Friday passed separate resolutions to prohibit Ms Noem from setting foot in their territory.

When she visited, that forthrightness struck Majel Boxer, a professor of Native American and Indigenous studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., who is Sisseton and Wahpeton Dakota.

They accounted for nearly 40% of the first-year students at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton in fall 2021.

“I have a real concern that this is only targeted at public schools,” the Wahpeton lawmaker said, adding that private schools receiving state and federal funding should also be included.

Eric James Murphy of Grand Forks, David Richter of Williston, and Cynthia Schreiber-Beck of Wahpeton - defied their party and voted against the bill.
