Volunteers in Service to America

Gov. Wes Moore has chosen Paul Monteiro, a former director of AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America, to lead a new state department to increase service among young adults in Maryland.

He spent four years training workers in the Volunteers in Service to America program.

He spent most of his career working for the federal government on social programs like the Peace Corps and Volunteers in Service to America.

About 30 years later, President Lyndon Johnson brought to fruition President John Kennedy’s “domestic Peace Corps” initiative, the Volunteers in Service to America program, known as VISTA.

Today, the United States has some small, underfunded programs of national service, such as AmeriCorps, Volunteers in Service to America and the Peace Corps.
