The current visitor centre is located a five minute drive from the path, with tours accessing the path via a shuttle bus service from the centre.

The spending also includes plans to create a new virtual reality offering at the existing visitor centre for those who cannot access the path.

It is unclear what the announcement means for those who work in the visitor centre or on the estate.

Rosemary Stow, who runs craft gallery Quillies, said most tourists do not make it past the visitor centre in the nearby Elan Valley.

The size of the star has been reduced slightly in the revised plans and the project - costing about £10m - will also include a visitor centre for the artwork which hopes to attract up to 250,000 people a year.
