Vanbrugh

Created by the architect and playwright John Vanbrugh in 1708, the ornate bridge was designed to be a “habitable viaduct” and is said to contain over 30 rooms.

There is no evidence the rooms Vanbrugh created were ever used.

A visit to Europe in 1948 stimulated an enduring admiration for Vanbrugh, Hawksmoor and Lutyens, but also the greatest of the modernists, Le Corbusier.

According to Vanbrugh, on his deathbed he said he was “91 years finding out a hole to go out of this world, and at length found it.”

The production at London's Jerwood Vanbrugh is a fundraiser, with all proceeds going towards Rada's Attenborough campaign, which aims to upgrade one of its main London sites and to provide on-site student accommodation.
