UV-B

Certain types of ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, called UV-B rays, increase the risk of skin cancer and cataracts in humans, but researchers do not yet know if the same is true for Antarctic mammals and birds.

UV-B radiation causes cancer and eye damage in humans.

UV-B, a high-energy form of solar radiation, damages DNA in plants and animals, disrupting a variety of biological processes and reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis.

One thing bar owners can do is use UV-C lights — not to be confused with retina-singeing UV-A and UV-B lights.

With the help of Dr. Bruce Davidson, a pulmonary physician and the former president of the National Tuberculosis Controllers Association, he installed fans and UV-C lights — not to be confused with retina-singeing UV-A and UV-B lights — on the bar’s ceiling.
