The history of Zhurong’s landing site—on Utopia Planitia, vast plains in Mars’s northern hemisphere—has puzzled scientists.

Zhurong is China’s first rover on the red planet, and it has been exploring the southern part of Utopia Planitia.

That mission’s rover, Zhurong, is currently exploring a Martian plain called Utopia Planitia, some 1,800 kilometers northeast of Perseverance’s location.

Then in May, China landed a rover called Zhurong in a huge basin known as Utopia Planitia, which was not only its first exploratory trip on Mars, but also ushered in a new era of space competition, as it showed its ability to compete in a space race long dominated by Americans and Russians.
