Talks are set to continue on Wednesday to end a strike by Birmingham bin workers which has seen mountains of uncollected rubbish pile up on pavements and street corners.

In parts of Birmingham waste continues to go uncollected as all-out strike action by bin workers grinds on into its sixth week, leaving some of the city's 1.2 million residents to deal with the fallout.

On Tuesday, the authority said the amount of uncollected waste had peaked at 22,000 tonnes and it was on track to clear a backlog by the weekend.

Birmingham City Council says it is on track to clear a backlog of uncollected waste by the weekend, despite the ongoing dispute with the Unite union.

Unite union members have been on an all-out strike since 11 March is a row over pay, leading to thousands of tonnes of uncollected rubbish and the city council declaring a major incident.
