Covering 23 percent of landlocked Nepal, the Tarai is its bread basket, providing rice, wheat, and is home to industries like jute and sugar.

Nepali newspapers are awash with reports of incidents of illegal logging in several forests in the unrest-affected Tarai plains of southern Nepal, which boasts some of the country's best lush green forests and national parks.

"Because we have no mobility, timber smuggling has increased, mainly from the forests of Tarai near the Indian border," he said.

"I know how devastating it is if you are not aware of the weather. During the horrific 1999 super cyclone, hundreds of our fishermen brothers were killed," said Tarai, 59, sitting with other fishermen in the Jagatsinghpur district.

Yet, wildlife-related loss of lives and properties are also increasingly being seen in the mid-hill region, geographically located between the Himalayas and Tarai plain land.
