Former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office this month for his shock martial law declaration, is also facing criminal charges.

South Korea will hold a presidential election on 3 June, its acting leader has said, after the country's constitutional court removed Yoon Suk Yeol from the presidency.

Pained cries rang out in front of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's official residence on Friday, as judges of the Constitutional Court judges confirmed his impeachment.

Yoon Suk Yeol was suspended from duty in December after being impeached by parliament, following his failed attempt to impose martial law.

On Friday, South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled Yoon Suk Yeol had abused his power by declaring martial law last December, and permanently removed him from office.
