By 1929, O’Keeffe was a millionaire in today’s dollars, thanks to Stieglitz’s efforts.

From Washington, he headed to New York, where he met the painter Georgia O’Keeffe and her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, a photographer who also ran the much-admired gallery An American Place.

In addition to Kinsey, they included photography legends Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz — heady company for a shy photographer from America’s Fourth Corner.

Fleming had sung Puts’ “Letters from Georgia” based on correspondence between Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, which premiered in 2016 and was expanded three years later into “The Brightness of Light.”

Mr. Stieglitz turned to the other newsmen, who were watching us with amused half smiles.
