Stephen Sondheim might have enjoyed the challenge of creating a musical from such an outlandish premise.

His instructor told him about a month ago to book his practical test, but each time Stephen looked, the only slots available were in Berwick-upon-Tweed or Scarborough, both more than an hour's drive away.

Sometimes that means keeping order in a courtroom, said Stephen Monier, a retired former U.S. marshal for the district of New Hampshire.

But toxicologist Dr Stephen Morley, giving evidence for the defence, said the levels in the victim's blood were "three times what toxicologists would be comfortable with", describing them as "likely to be fatal".
