It’s a Thursday night and West Coast rap anthems are thumping over the sound system.

Going out to raves in London and around the U.K., we were standing next to sound systems that were shaking your whole body to understand what music can do.

The class is on Thursdays and begins with informal breakout groups, with students discussing a given topic or getting to know each other against a backdrop of popular music piped through the auditorium sound system.

The hotel’s high-fidelity sound system was paying homage to Glenn Miller’s big-band music.

It’s relatively quiet but for the whirring of cardio equipment and a blend of lo-fi and electronic pop music on the sound system.
