District Judge John J. Sirica reduced the prison sentences of Mitchell, former White House chief of staff H.R.

Some observers said her decisions over prosecutors’ access to witnesses and evidence could be as weighty as those a half-century ago taken by Chief Judge John Sirica, who famously released secret White House tapes that doomed Richard M. Nixon.

Two of the men indicted for the break-in to the Democratic National Headquarters went to trial before Judge John Sirica.

Judge Sirica suspected a cover-up and that higher-up authorities were involved.
