Alexander Shevchenko helped Kazakhstan reach the quarter-finals as they knocked out defending champions Germany, who were without world number two Alexander Zverev because of a biceps injury.

Oleksandr Shevchenko, the deputy head of passenger services at Ukrzaliznytsia, lauded his railway’s ability to transport so many world leaders on long overnight trips and cater as best as it can to their needs.

This included a commander, Sergei Shevchenko, who was killed in action.

“We have one team on the field and a million on the front,” said Andriy Shevchenko, a former soccer star who is Ukraine’s most famous player and now heads the national soccer federation.

By this time, Shevchenko and Lobanovskyi shared a secret unknown to anyone else inside the dressing room: it would be their final European campaign together.
