“Back then, it felt like it was a very top-down approach by the SEIU. I wasn’t involved, but I knew it was happening,” said Scott Uriu, who has taught part time in the USC School of Architecture for 14 years and supports unionization.

And canvassers like me, the phalanx from 1199 SEIU, made sure that every voter we spoke to knew how to cast their votes early or by mail.

Canvassers can’t legally leave literature in mailboxes, so they tucked SEIU’s purple-and-white fliers — printed in English and Spanish, promoting Harris, her running mate Tim Walz and Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen as “champions for working people” — into security doors and wrought-iron gates.

Corona decided to join SEIU’s canvassing efforts after Harris entered the race.
