Before the shutdown, Jared Davis used to earn much of his income leading sportfishing tours out of Sausalito on his 56-foot boat Salty Lady.

Lucille, who recovered from her seizures, was transported to the center’s Sausalito hospital via air-conditioned truck the following day.

Veggie, another sea lion who was rescued the same day, did make it to Sausalito however.

Giancarlo Rulli, a spokesman for the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, said that since mid-July, the center’s network has seen an increase in the number of affected sea lions along the coast in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

If the animal can be triaged nearby and stabilized, Rulli said, rescuers try to transport them to the institute’s hospital in Sausalito.
