A whistleblower has told Panorama there was a "pattern" of "pigeonholing" small businesses as "distressed" when they were "salvageable".

The upcoming rain, for many evacuees, has only heightened their desire to search their ruined homes for anything salvageable before it can be damaged by water.

During a news conference at the hospital on Thursday, Elsayegh said his family will eventually want to go back to their home to see if anything is salvageable, he said.

"The damage downstairs is smoke and water damage and the only room salvageable is the kitchen."

A spokesperson for the nonprofit said they are waiting for a report from a structural engineer to “inform our next steps in determining what extent, if any, the Morrison Hotel may be salvageable.”
