“The Andy Griffith Show” featured the star as a wise sheriff and single father to Ron Howard’s Opie; never out of the top 10 across its eight seasons, it led the ratings in its last, 1968, and turned into the Andy-less “Mayberry, R.F.D.” for an additional three.

“It feels like our experience 20 years ago was ‘Mayberry R.F.D.,’ and Andy Griffith was our sheriff,” said Lanny A. Breuer, who was one of the White House lawyers defending Mr. Clinton against impeachment.

R.F.D. is mostly quaint today, but a new issue is sparking another urban-rural divide: broadband access.

He later starred in “Mayberry R.F.D.” — a spinoff of “The Andy Griffith Show,” which had featured Mr. Berry in its final season — and “Mama’s Family,” which aired for six seasons beginning in 1983.

Ken Berry, who starred in the TV series “F Troop,” “Mayberry R.F.D.” and “Mama’s Family,” died Dec. 1.
