The Revd Canon Abigail Thompson said the entire city would grieve for Harvey, adding: "Sheffield isn't the kind of place where this happens."

They told the Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell: "Having listened to clergy, congregations and staff at the diocesan offices and the cathedral it is with deep regret that the senior leadership of the Diocese of Liverpool feel the position of the Rt Revd Dr John Perumbalath is currently untenable."

The Bishop of Gloucester, Rt Revd Rachel Treweek said any bishop thinking about becoming the Archbishop of Canterbury needs "their head reading".

“If the Church, of which I am part, had begun to address some of its structures 10 or 15 years before, these things may never have happened and I’m deeply sorry for that,” said the Very Revd Peter Howell-Jones.
