The entire Kapkanets family were killed in their home in the Donetsk region in October last year by Anton Sopov, 21, and Stanislav Rau, 28, prosecutors said.

Sopov and Rau were convicted of killing 53-year-old Eduard Kapkanets, his wife Tatiana, their adult sons with their wives, a nine-year-old granddaughter, a four-year-old grandson and a more distant relative of the family.

Student governor at the RAU, Alexandra Godfrey, 21, said: "I think spiking is something you are always thinking about especially as a woman."

Will Marsh, director of external communications at the RAU, said: "It is not something we have a specific problem with here in Cirencester and at the University but anything that can keep our students safe is something that we want to support."

But British farmers told researchers from the RAU they did not see "alternative meat" products as a threat.
