For more than 20 overs of the chase, all signs pointed towards a thrilling finish as the Proteas stayed right alongside where New Zealand had been at the same stage.

The chase started well, with Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen putting on 105 for the second wicket.

The Proteas' fearsome middle order of Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen – regarded as the best attacker of spin in the world - and David Miller, who has the highest average against slow bowling of any batter in top-tier ODIs since the start of 2022, would not be so conservative.

The Proteas progress as group winners to the semi-finals, where they will play the loser of Sunday's match between India and New Zealand.

India remain tournament favourites but the Proteas, whose victory was sealed by an emphatic David Miller six, have the firepower to go all of the way.
