Pearl River

The hum of sewing machines is a constant in parts of Guangzhou, a thriving port on the Pearl River in southern China.

Lee ended his restaurant Pearl River Deli last year after he could not make the business model work.

It intensified over the weekend, hammering the north of the province and the Pearl River Delta in the south, which includes Guangdong’s capital, Guangzhou, as well as the cities of Hong Kong and Macau.

They planned to follow that with a scenic boat cruise along the city’s Pearl River.

More than 65 notable eateries closed last year, and the trend hasn’t let up: Spartina, Manzke, Pearl River Deli and others shuttered in the first few months of 2024.
