The elected Conservative PCC has asked the Chief Constable for an explanation and said a review was taking place.

Bedfordshire's Labour PCC John Tizard said the case exposed weaknesses in the current law, a sentiment shared by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Tizard, who was elected as Labour PCC last May, wants Yvette Cooper to look at the law and "make us all safer".

In practice, the PCC says, this means the small rural crime team "can now call on the whole force as their cavalry", from drones to road policing to armed response.

The gathering at PCC, organized by a nonprofit called Change Reaction, was intended as a show of support for those impacted by the fires, with relief checks of up to $5,000 distributed to attendees.
