In Paducah, Kentucky, which was in the path of totality, along with communities to the west in Illinois, thousands of people crossed the Ohio River after watching the eclipse.

Seventy miles away, city officials in Paducah, Ky., were surprised by the number of visitors they got.

On Tuesday, the committee ousted Immanuel Baptist Church of Paducah, Ky., whose senior minister is a woman.

It happened, too, at a school tucked between tobacco fields, a half dozen miles outside Paducah, Kentucky.

“No one plans on security issues when they travel,” says Shields, an endodontist from Paducah, Ky. “When it happens, you need to know how to get help.”
