Northern Rhodesia

Smith was born in 1933 in Northern Rhodesia — now Zambia — and set many of his stories in Africa, where he grew up on a cattle ranch and hunted game.

Born in January 1933 in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, he devoured tales from Rider Haggard and John Buchan as a child.

Once known as Northern Rhodesia, the country in southern Africa achieved its independence in 1964.

Kaunda rose to prominence as a key figure in what was then Northern Rhodesia's independence movement from Britain in the 1950s.

Mr. Kaunda served in Northern Rhodesia’s legislature and became prime minister in 1964, shortly before the protectorate gained full independence from Britain.
