Branches flew dangerously in the wind, and trees collapsed on vehicles in the neighborhood of Sanctuary Cove in nearby North Palm Beach.

Images posted on social media showed a car being flipped by strong winds in the pouring rain and a wind funnel sweeping across North Palm Beach on Saturday.

The village of North Palm Beach said on Twitter that police officers, fire rescue teams and staff members from the Public Works Department were checking the area “after a tornado touched down around 5:45 p.m.”

Storm surge warnings for a “life-threatening” rise in ocean water stretched from North Palm Beach northward to southeastern Georgia midway between Jacksonville and Savannah.
