North Caucasus

Almost as distant is the North Caucasus, where Chechnya is located, which has also been targeted previously by Ukraine.

The Azerbaijan Airlines plane, an Embraer 190, was traveling from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus before it attempted an emergency landing.

They visited Russia every couple of years until Victoria decided she wanted to go back permanently - she missed her relatives and hometown of Maykop in the North Caucasus.

In recent years, Russia has imposed the "anti-terrorist operation" regime in villages and towns of its North Caucasus region, where security forces have been battling militants.

When terrorists from the North Caucasus burst into the Nord-Ost theater in Moscow in 2002 and took more than 700 audience members, players, and staff hostage, Russian special forces pumped toxic gas into the theater, killing most of the attack’s 130 victims.
