Green’s acknowledgement of all those who rushed to Maui’s aid after the fire brought tears to the eyes of state Rep. Dee Morikawa, the House majority floor leader and a Democrat representing the western part of Kauai and Niihau.

The high surfing warning was in effect for north- and west-facing shores of the islands of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau and north-facing shores of Maui.

A hurricane warning is in effect for the islands of Kauai and Niihau as well as Oahu, home to the state’s largest city, Honolulu, with the storm beginning to impact the island as early as the late morning.
