The mobilization is urgent as the National Endowment for the Arts may be next on the chopping block — its budget has been redirected away toward project that celebrate “America’s greatness.”

Home to the University of Colorado Boulder as well as the Boulder International Film Festival, the city has a vibrant arts community, with the third-highest concentration of professional artists per capita in the nation, according to the National Endowment for the Arts.

His tastes in rock and pop music were a subtle but unmistakable gesture toward racial reconciliation and, as evidenced by his support of the National Endowment for the Arts later, a vision of a diverse and inclusive American culture.

Haynes, who was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 1995, is survived by his daughter and two sons: Graham, a jazz cornetist, and Craig, a drummer.

A former gang member who spent several years incarcerated, Debora was recently honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as a 2024 NEA National Heritage Fellow.
