On July 9, 1868, the steamship Milwaukee was crossing Lake Michigan on its way to the lakefront town of Muskegon, Mich., to pick up a load of lumber when disaster struck.

“Her disruption here has been immense,” said Timothy Maat, a prosecutor from Muskegon County.

Muskegon County Circuit Judge Matthew Kacel said he didn’t believe Paul Ferguson was sorry for the abusive punishments, including ice baths, he and his mother carried out that led to Timothy Ferguson’s death.
