He’s already asked fellowship communities in Southern California to organize food and clothing drives, while monks and nuns at the group’s center in Mount Washington are offering spiritual counseling over the phone.

Renaud, temporarily living in a friend’s accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, in Mount Washington, also wants to help.

The coalition, which sued the city in 2023 challenging its approval of a single-family home in Mount Washington, first found out about the disappearing messages during the lawsuit’s discovery process.

The investigation was the result of an agreement between the city and a community group, the Crane Boulevard Safety Coalition, which found out about the disappearing messages in the course of litigation involving the construction of a home in Mount Washington.

In a lawsuit filed in July 2023, the coalition challenged the city’s approval of the construction of a single-family home on a steep hillside in Mount Washington.
