Mother Goddess

At one in Bagha Jatin in south Kolkata, his mother Goddess looks more fierce than maternal.

Separately, investigators said, a seizure warrant was issued on Tuesday for another Met item: a sixth-century stone sculpture depicting a Hindu mother goddess, or Matrika, acquired in 1993.

Among the artifacts is a shell-studded statue of the mother goddess Ngonnso’, which holds great spiritual significance for the Nso’ people of northwest Cameroon, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation said.

Its black-and-white patterned floor is in homage to the sidewalk in Ipanema, where she grew up, and the painting upstage center is of the mother goddess Iemanjá.
