In Algeria a day earlier, Senouci Touat, an unemployed 34-year-old man, tried to self-immolate in front of the security directorate in the northern town of Mostaganem, a local newspaper reported.

At Mostaganem, one pregnant Moslem woman defied doctor's orders to take her place in line and produced her baby right in the polling station.

He died at Mostaganem in Algeria on the 14th of July 1859.

Her daughter had been married and was living at Bordeaux, and her son was in garrison at Mostaganem.
