The ex-mayor’s brother, Erik Juárez Blanquet, a state lawmaker and also a former mayor of Angamacutiro, was shot dead in 2020 when a pair of assassins on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle in the state capital of Morelia.

"It's possible that Corallicolids have different effects depending on who they're infecting," says UBC researcher Morelia Trznadel, the first author of the paper.

The first flight to Morelia, a city in central Mexico hundreds of miles from the nearest U.S. border crossing, took off on Tuesday carrying more than 100 Mexicans, according to two U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide details.

Perez, who was born in Morelia, Mexico, moved to the West Coast in December 2015 to seek asylum in the U.S.

"Mining will create water pollution, exploitation of the earth and destruction," said Morelia Fuentes, a resident of a small agricultural community inside the forest.
