Metropolitan Opera

The French Canadian conductor, just turned 50, is a mainstay on the East Coast as music director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

The ad-hoc festival began with a celebration of the Industry, the most impressive opera lab in America, and a wave goodbye to its founder, Yuval Sharon, who has taken the revolution to Detroit Opera, where he is artistic director, and to the Metropolitan Opera, where he will face the greatest challenge of his career attempting to mend the company’s old Wagnerian ways with radical new productions of “Tristan und Isolde” and the “Ring” cycle.

Lest LBO be mistaken for New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Met mezzo-soprano who starred as the gypsy in Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” will sing whatever animal is needed in Oliveros’ “El Relicario de los Animales,” which will be mounted at Heritage Square Museum on Feb. 15 and 16.

On a visit to New York in November, Jolie and Pablo Larraín, who directed her in the biographical film “Maria,” were guests at the Metropolitan Opera, taking in a performance of “Tosca,” the Puccini opera about the relentless diva of its title.

Sharon will need to spend more time in New York City, where earlier this year the Metropolitan Opera announced that Sharon would direct its next “Ring” cycle beginning in 2028.
