Authorities in the Southeast Asian nation lost contact with the plane Wednesday afternoon as it was flying from the southern city of Myeik, also known as Mergui, to the country’s largest city, Yangon, the military said.

The Chinese-made Y-8 turboprop aircraft disappeared Wednesday afternoon about a half-hour after leaving Myeik, also known as Mergui, for Yangon on a route that would have taken it over the Andaman Sea.
