About this time last year, Alan Bergo, the forager and onetime chef of Minneapolis’ late, lamented Lucia’s, was driving near his home in Menomonie, Wis., when a yearling buck bounded in front of his car.

The district runs from north of the university town of Menomonie in the northwest down through the Mississippi River bluffs and rolling hills of the picturesque Driftless Area and includes Chippewa Falls, home of Leinenkugel beer.

The hope was to scoop up supporters in the small Democratic-leaning cities from Platteville in the south to Menomonie in the north.

And so began the Menomonie, Wis., youth’s transformation into “Mullet Boy.”
