Malvinas

Last week, in response to the Chagos agreement, Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino promised "concrete action" to ensure that the Falklands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas, were handed to Buenos Aires.

Since 2022, H5N1 in South America has killed at least 600,000 wild birds and 50,000 mammals, including elephant seals and sea lions in Argentina, Chile and Peru, and thousands of albatrosses in the Malvinas/Falkland Islands.

Argentina’s recently elected President Javier Milei has called for the islands — known as the Islas Malvinas in Argentina — to be handed over to Buenos Aires.

After his meeting with President Milei last month, who believes his country has non-negotiable sovereignty over the islands Argentina calls Islas Malvinas, the Foreign Office said "they would agree to disagree, and do so politely".

The Falklands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, are about 8,000 miles from the UK and about 300 miles from mainland Argentina.
