Even as Kirke found success on her own, for her prominent role on “Mozart in the Jungle” among other projects, she was struggling with her sense of who she was, drinking and smoking and sabotaging herself along the way.

Kirke spoke recently with The Times about her unusual upbringing and writing about it.
