Yet back in Kirinyaga County, Mr Kinyua says low and volatile prices have left him unsure about his future in farming.

Mr Kinyua, a member of the Mutira Farmers Cooperative in Kenya's Kirinyaga County, adds that higher temperatures attract more pests and diseases, raising the cost of protecting his produce.

For example, in Kirinyaga County in central Kenya, he says some 23,000 people more people voted for the president than for the governor, according to unverified media reports.

Among those still hoping to stand are the current governors of Kirinyaga and Nakuru counties in south-central Kenya, both of whom lost out in the governing Jubilee Party's selection process.

The 23-year-old paid £56 for a three-hour taxi ride from her home in Kirinyaga County in central Kenya.
