The complaint alleges the abuse happened at youth centers in locations all over the state including Chicago, Joliet, Harrisburg, Murphysboro and Warrenville.

Karels was arrested after leading police on a chase that ended in a crash at an highway bridge in Joliet, Round Lake Beach police said.

He was transported to a Joliet hospital where he was pronounced dead, Deputy Chief Dan Jungles of the Will County Sheriff’s Office said.

The family stayed for about a year in Joliet, Ill., where Dr. Abrahamsen had found work at a penitentiary, before settling in New York.

Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton, 21, of Joliet was charged with one count of obstructing justice after the Will County State’s Attorney Office reviewed information provided by detectives who interviewed her Monday, Joliet police said.
