He married Rosalynn Smith in 1946, and they had four children — Jack, James III "Chip", Donnel and Amy — as well as 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The highlight of his haul in 2022 was a hoard of farthings from the reign of 15th Century Scottish King James III.

An expert at the National Museum of Scotland said it was the first hoard of James III farthings to be found since 1919.

The James III hoard has been put into the British numismatics journal, which charts the best finds in the country.

Orkney was under Norwegian and Danish control for centuries until 1472 when the islands were taken by the Scottish crown as part of Margaret of Denmark’s wedding dowry to King James III of Scotland.
