French authorities charged that while Mr. Diack led the IAAF, $15 million from the organization was funneled to companies controlled by his son, Papa Massata Diack.

Lamine Diack, a onetime politician in Senegal who became the powerful head of the IAAF, the international organization governing track and field, only to be convicted in a corruption scandal linked to bribes to cover up positive drug tests by athletes, died Dec. 3 at his home in Senegal.

Diack was president of the IAAF, now World Athletics, from 1999 to 2015 after holding several political positions in Senegal.

His conviction in France last year marked a spectacular fall from grace for a man who led World Athletics, then known as the IAAF, for nearly two decades and was an influential figure in the world of Olympic sports.

World Athletics, which was then known as the IAAF, announced in 2018 it would introduce the rules.
